O Abrigo

O Abrigo is a public installation addressing Lisbon's housing crisis through homelessness. Created for the National Museum of Theatre and Dance's "O Teatro Está na Rua" project, it centers on a tent, symbolizing the maximum shelter for homeless individuals. It's filled with 250 free A3 prints. These prints deconstruct Portuguese newspaper articles about the housing crisis, overlaying red words like "conforto," "segurança," and "dignidade" to highlight physical and emotional needs absent from homeless lives. The aesthetic reflects how newspapers serve homeless people as survival tools rather than information sources.

Supporting materials include street posters (50x70cm and MUPI) with provocative phrases like "Desculpe estar no seu caminho" printed in red on deconstructed newspaper backgrounds. The project connects Portugal's housing crisis, fueled by short-term rentals and digital nomad policies to its extreme outcome: employed people unable to afford housing. Printed on grey papel manteigueiro instead of newsprint, the work invites reflection while maintaining tactile reference to its subject matter.
